Solve the equation 3x + 5 = 26

3x + 5 = 26
3x + 5 – 5 = 26 – 5
Subtract 5 from both sides
3x = 21
$\frac{3 x}{3} = \frac{21}{3}$
Divide both sides by 3
x = 7

Example 7b

Solve the equation 2y – 11 = 19

2y – 11 = 19
2y – 11 + 11 = 19 + 11
Add 11 to both sides
2y = 30
$\frac{2 y}{2} = \frac{30}{2}$
Divide both sides by 2
y = 15
