Chapter 18.6 (Mathematics 5)

Solving Simple Equations (3)

Examples

Example 7a

Solve the equation 3x + 5 = 26

  1. 3x + 5 = 26
  2. 3x + 5 – 5 = 26 – 5
    Subtract 5 from both sides
  3. 3x = 21
    3x 3 = 213
    Divide both sides by 3
  4. x = 7

Example 7b

Solve the equation 2y – 11 = 19

  1. 2y – 11 = 19
  2. 2y – 11 + 11 = 19 + 11
    Add 11 to both sides
  3. 2y = 30
    2y 2 = 302
    Divide both sides by 2
  4. y = 15
