Division of minutes and seconds by whole numbers

In groups of five:

  1. Write time in minutes and seconds, for example, 7 minutes 25 seconds.
  2. Multiply the time by a whole number less than 10 and bigger than 1.
Write the product in minutes and seconds.
  3. Divide the product in minutes and seconds by the number you used when multiplying.
  4. Discuss the process of division of time in minutes and seconds by whole numbers.
  5. Share the results with other groups.

Example 6a

Divide 36 minutes 30 second by 6

6 3 6 minutes 3 5 seconds 6 36minutes30seconds - 36 minutes 30 seconds -3 0 minutes 3 0 seconds

Answer

36 minutes 30 second ÷ 6 = 6 minutes 5 seconds

Example 6b

Divide 58 minutes 20 seconds by 7

  1. 58 minutes ÷ 7 = 8 minutes rem 2 minutes
  2. Convert remaining minutes to seconds
    2 × 60 seconds = 120 seconds
  3. Add 20 to 120 to get 140 seconds
  4. 140 seconds ÷ 7  = 20 seconds

Answer

58 minutes 20 seconds ÷ 7 = 8 minutes 20 seconds
