What is the sum of 234 162, 21 020 and 17?

In groups of five:

  1. Represent 234 162, 21 020 and 17 on an abacus.
  2. Count the number of rings in each place value.
  3. Discuss the number represented on the abacus.
  4. Discuss and share the results with other groups.

Example 1

A county distributed 14 253 kg, 213 040 kg and 451 300 kg of maize to three hardship areas. How many kilograms of maize did the county distribute altogether?

Total maize distributed is
​14 253 kg + 213 040 kg + 451 300 kg

678 593 kg of maize was distributed.

To add numbers:

  1. Align the digits according to their place values starting with the ones.
  2. Numbers that are added together are called addends. The result of addition is the sum.
