Example 3a. Multiplication

Daudi had some apples. Akiki had three times as many apples as Daudi. If Akiki had 42 apples, form an equation to represent this information.

Let Daudi have y apples

Akiki had 3 × y =

3y apples

42

Example 3b. Division

Abdi had g goats. He shared the goats equally among his six sons. If each son got 7 goats, write an equation to represent this information.

Abdi had g goats.

Each son got g ÷ 6 =

7 goats.
