Chapter 2.5 (Mathematics 5)

Creating number patterns involving addition

Creating number patterns involving addition

Group Activity 6

In groups:

  1. Write a number less than 100.
  2. Add 100 to the number.
  3. Add 100 to the sum.
  4. Continue to add 100 to the sum in each step to get the first 10 numbers.
  5. Make a list of the 10 numbers formed.
  6. Discuss the pattern of numbers made.
  7. Share your results with other groups.

Note

To make a pattern of numbers involving addition, continue adding the same number.

Example 6

A tray holds 30 eggs. Make a pattern of the number of eggs in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 trays.

  • Number of eggs in one tray is 30
  • Number of eggs in two trays is 30 + 30 = 60
  • Number of eggs in three trays is 60 + 30 = 90
  • Number of eggs in four trays is 90 + 30 = 120
  • Number of eggs in five trays is 120 + 30 = 150
  • Number of eggs in six crates is 150 + 30 = 180

The pattern is 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180.

Exercise F

F1

Work in pairs to make patterns of 6 numbers as directed.

  1. Start at 500, use the rule “Add 500”.
  2. Start at 3500, use the rule “Add 1000”.
  1. 100, 150, 200, 250,
  2. 2 750, 3 000, 3 250, 3 500,
  3. 18 275, 19 275, 20 275, 21 275,
  4. 925 000, 932 000, 939 000, 946 000,

F3

Use the rule “Add 1000” to make a pattern of 6 numbers.

F4

A trader sold oranges in groups of five. Make a pattern to show the number of oranges in 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 groups.

Each box contained 50 books.

  1. Write the number of boxes in each layer as a pattern. Start with the box at the top.
  2. Write the number of books as a pattern. Start with the books in the top layer.
