Chapter 5.1 (Mathematics 5)

Division of a 2-digit number by a 2digit number

Division of a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number

Group Activity 1

To divide 72 by 12.

In pairs:

  1. List multiples of 12 up to a number slightly greater than 72.
  2. Find a number that multiplies by 12 to get 72.
  3. Discuss the results and share with other groups.

Note

The number obtained is the quotient.

72 is the dividend.

12 is the divisor.

Example 1

Work out:

a) 99 ÷ 11

99 ÷ 11 = 9

b) 78 ÷ 14

78 ÷ 4 = 5 rem 8

or
78 – 14 = 64
64 – 14 = 50
50 – 14 = 36
36 – 14 = 22
22 – 14 = 8
14 is subtracted
5 times
78 ÷ 14 = 5 Rem 8

Exercise A

  • 3
  • 3 rem 9
  • 4 rem 1
  • 4
  • 42 ÷ 14
  • 48 ÷ 13
  • 97 ÷ 24
  • 84 ÷ 21

A2

Divide:

  1. 56 by 14
  2. 64 by 16
  3. 75 by 15

A3

Use other methods to work out:

  1. 39 ÷ 12
  2. 65 ÷ 17
  3. 98 ÷ 18

96  12 =

75  25 =
