Group Activity 6

In pairs:

  1. Get a rectangular cut-out.
  2. Divide the rectangular cut-out into eight equal parts.
  3. Shade seven parts.
  4. Shade again with a different colour three of the shaded parts.
  5. Count the number of parts shaded once.
  6. Discuss your results and share with other groups.

Example 6

Salim was given 912 of a loaf of bread. He gave Juliana 412 of the bread and ate the rest. What fraction of the bread did Salim eat?

Salim had 912 of bread.

He gave Juliana 412 of bread.

Fraction of bread remaining is 912-412=9-412=512.

Salim ate 512 of bread.

Note

To subtract fractions with same denominators, subtract the numerators and keep the same denominator.
