Using a 100 m string to measure distance
In groups of five:
- Use a tape measure or a metre rule to prepare 100 metre strings.
- Use the 100 m string to measure the perimeter of:
- Football field.
- School compound.
- Record the results as in the table shown.

Group Activity 2
In groups:
- Fix a peg at the school gate.
- From the peg, measure a distance of 100 m along the side of the road and mark with a peg.
- Continue measuring and marking with pegs until you get ten equal intervals of 100 metres each.
- Walk along the same route back to the school gate.
- Discuss the distance covered.
Note
- The ten intervals of 100 metres is 1 000 metres.
- 1 000 metres make 1 kilometre.
- The kilometre is used to measure long distances.
- Kilometre in short form is written as km.
