Chapter 8.2 (Mathematics 5)

Metres and kilometres

Establishing relationship between the kilometre and the metre

In groups of five:

  1. Prepare a 100 m string.
  2. Use the 100 metres string to measure a distance of 1 000 m round the football field.
  3. Count how many times the 100 m string was used to cover 1 000 m.
  4. Discuss the relationship between the kilometre and the metre.

Note

1 kilometre is 1 000 metres

1 km = 1 000 m

Conversion of kilometres to metres

Example 1

Convert the following to metres.

  1. 9 km
    1 km = 1 000 m
    9 km = 9 × 1 000 m = 9 000 m
  2. 8 km 560 m
    1 km = 1 000 m
    8 km = 8 × 1 000 m
    8 km 560 m = 8 000 m + 560 m = 8 560 m

Exercise C

  1. 3 km =  m
  2. 8 km =  m
  3. 12 km =  m
  1. 27 km =  m
  2. 45 km =  m
  3. 86 km =  m
  1. 4 km 150 m =  m
  2. 6 km 58 m =  m
  3. 9 km 950 m =  m

Conversion of metres to kilometres

Example 2

  1. 4 000 metres to kilometres.
    1 000 m = 1 km
    4 000 m = 4 000 m ÷ 1 000 m = 4 km
  2. 8 200 metres to kilometres and metres.
    1 000 m = 1 km
    8 200 m = 8 200 m ÷ 1 000 m =
    = 8 × 1 000 m + 200 m = 8 km 200 m

Exercise D

  1. 6 000 m =  km
  2. 7 000 m =  km
  3. 8 000 m =  km
  4. 14 000 m =  km
  5. 27 000 m =  km
  6. 42 000 m =  km
  1. 3 500 m =  km  m
  2. 4 700 m =  km  m
  3. 5 500 m =  km  m
  4. 3 725 m =  km  m
  5. 7 820 m =  km  m
  6. 9 785 m =  km  m
