Chapter 8.3 (Mathematics 5)

Addition of metres and kilometres

Addition of metres and kilometres without conversion of units

Example 3

  1. Add
    • 47 km 40 m to 156 km 95 m
    • 130 km 400 m to 90 km 230 m

km m 47 40 + 156 95 203 135

  1. Add metres
    40 + 95 = 135 m
  2. Add kilometres
    47 + 156 = 203 km

km m 130 400 + 90 230 220 630

  1. Add metres
    400 + 230 = 630 m
  2. Add kilometres
    130 + 90 = 220 km
  1. The distance from Koma to Vima is 5 km 250 m and the distance from Vima to Kwengu is 7 km 400 m. What is the total distance from Koma to Kwengu through Vima?

km m Distance from Koma to Vima 5 250 Distance from Vima to Kwengu + 7 400 Total distance 12 650

Exercise E

E1

In pairs, work out:

E2

Work out:

  1. What is the total distance from Naro to Kiwa through Met?
     km  m
  2. What is the total distance from Naku to Kimu through Kecho?
     km  m
  3. Waita drove from Nairo to Met through Naro. What distance did he cover?
     km  m
  4. Tito transported tea from Kecho to Nairo through Met and Naro. What distance did he cover?
     km  m

17 km 280 m   3 km 460 m =
 km  m

Addition of kilometres and metres with conversion of units

Group Activity 5

In pairs, find the total length of the two sections.

The length of two road sections is 3 km 500 m and 2 km 800 m.

km m 3 500 + 2 800

  1. Set the addition of the two sections vertically.
  2. First add the metres. What do you notice?
  3. Regroup the metres into km and metres.
  4. Write the metres in the metres column and transfer the km to km column.
  5. Add the km.
  6. Discuss the results and share with other groups.

Example 4

  1. Work out:
    56 km 750 m + 131 km 400 m
  1. Add metres: 750 + 400 = 1 150 m
  2. Regroup into 1150 m = 1 km 150 m
  3. Add kilometres: 1 + 56 + 131 = 188
  1. Muhando cycled for 8 km 900 m and walked to 2 km 350 m. What total distance did Muhando travel?
  1. Add metres: 900 + 330 = 1 230
    1 230 m = 1 km 230 m
  2. Add kilometres: 1 + 8 + 2 = 11 km

Exercise F

F1

F2

  1. 84 km 640 m to 171 km 880 m
    The result is  km  m.
  2. 101 km 650 m to 95 km 780 m
    The result is  km  m.

94 km 830 m   8 km 273 m =  km  m

235 km 782 m  187 km 350 m =  km  m

The total distance is
 km  m.
