Multiplication of litres and millilitres with whole numbers
Group Activity 9
A container holds 2 l 300 ml of milk. How much milk will 8 such containters hold?
In pairs:
- Set the multiplication in a vertical form.
- First multiply the millilitres by 8.
- Express the millilitres in litres and ml.
- Write the ml in the ml column.
- Multiply litres by 8 and add the carried number of litres.
- Write the answer in the litres column.
- Discuss the results and share with other groups.

Work out 15 l 230 ml × 4
Example 9b
Work out 3 l 250 ml × 6
- 250 ml × 6 = 1 500 ml.
- Regroup 1500 ml as 1 l and 500 ml.
- Write 500 ml in ml column and 1 l above 3 in litres column.
- Multiply litres 3 × 6 = 18.
- Add 1 l + 18 l = 19 l and record in litres column.
