Chapter 11.6 (Mathematics 5)

Multiplication of Litres and Millilitres

Multiplication of litres and millilitres with whole numbers

Group Activity 9

A container holds 2 l 300 ml of milk. How much milk will 8 such containters hold?

In pairs:

  1. Set the multiplication in a vertical form.
  2. First multiply the millilitres by 8.
  3. Express the millilitres in litres and ml.

l ml 2 300 × 8

  1. Write the ml in the ml column.
  2. Multiply litres by 8 and add the carried number of litres.
  3. Write the answer in the litres column.
  4. Discuss the results and share with other groups.

Example 9a

Work out 15 l 230 ml × 4

l ml 15 230 × 4 60 920

Example 9b

Work out 3 l 250 ml × 6

l ml 3 1 250 × 6 19 500

  1. 250 ml × 6 = 1 500 ml.
  2. Regroup 1500 ml as 1 l and 500 ml.
  1. Write 500 ml in ml column and 1 l above 3 in litres column.
  2. Multiply litres 3 × 6 = 18.
  3. Add 1 l + 18 l = 19 l and record in litres column.
