Chapter 11.7 (Mathematics 5)

Division of Litres and Millilitres

Division of litres and millilitres by whole numbers

Group Activity 8

A farmer had a container holding 46 l 800 ml of water. The water was put into five jerrycans of equal capacity. Find the amount of water in each jerrycan.

In groups of three:

  1. Write the quotient in a long division form.
  2. First divide the litres by 5. Write the estimated quotient above 6.

5   l   ml 5 5 46 l  800 ml

  1. Multiply the estimated quotient by 5 and subtract the product from 46 l.
  2. Convert the results of (3) to millilitres and add 800 ml to it.
  3. Divide the result by 5.
  4. Discuss the result and share with other groups.

Example 10a

Divide 10 l 255 ml by 5

Divide

  1. 10 l by 5 and
  2. 255 ml by 5

Example 10b

Divide 14 l 400 ml by 9

  1. 14 l ÷ 9 = 1 rem 5 l
  2. 5 l = 5 1 000 ml =
    = 5 000 ml
  3. 5 000 ml + 400 ml =
    = 5 400 ml
  4. 5 400 ml ÷ 9 = 600 ml

Example 10c

A jug contained 3 l 360 ml of mango juice. Seven children shared the juice equally. How much juice did each child get?

Each child got 3 l 360 ml ÷ 7.

  1. Divide 3 l by 7 to get 0. Write 0 in the litres column.
  2. Multiply 0 by 7 to get 0. Subtract 0 from 3 l to get 3 l.
  3. Convert 3 l to ml to get 3 000 ml.
  4. Add 3 000 ml to 360 ml to get 3 360 ml.
  5. Divide 3 360 by 9.

Therefore, 3 l 360 ml ÷ 7 = 480 ml
