Meaning of Tax

Group Activity 4

In groups of five, discuss the following:

  1. Who pays salaries for government employees such as teachers, doctors, police and judges?
  2. Who pays for construction of roads, dams, government offices, hospitals and schools?
  3. Who pays for medicine, hospital equipment, school books and free primary education?
  4. Where does the government get money to pay for public services?
  5. Share your findings with other groups.

Note

The amount of money paid to the government so that it can pay for public services is called tax.

  1. Write five services which the government provides and pays for from the taxes it collects.
  2. Discuss the importance of the services you have written.
  3. Share the results with the other groups.
  4. Name the services shown in the pictures.
