Chapter 6.4 (Mathematics 5)

Ordering fractions

Ordering fractions

In groups of four:

Arrange the fractions 23, 34 and 512 from the smallest to the largest.

  1. Copy the number lines shown:
  1. Divide the first line into 3 equal parts and show 23.
Divide the second line into 4 equal parts and show 34.
Divide the third line into 12 equal parts and show 512.
  2. Compare the fractions. Arrange the fractions from smallest to the largest.
  • 34
  • 23
  • 512
  1. Discuss and share with other groups.

Example 4

Arrange the fractions, 45, 12, 410 and 35 in an increasing order.

Method 1

From the number lines, the increasing order is:

410, 12, 35, 45

Method 2

12=510, 35=610, 45=810

Increasing order is 410, 12, 35, 45

Note

The decreasing order is 45, 35, 12, 410
