Multiplication of metres and kilometres

Group Activity 8

In pairs:

  1. Take a distance in kilometres and metres.
  2. Multiply the distance by a single digit number other than 0 and 1.
  3. Discuss and share your results with other groups.

Example 7

Multiply 50 km 200 m by 7.

  1. 200 m × 7 = 1400 m.
  2. 1400 m = 1 km 400 m.
    Regroup 1 400 m into 1 km and 400 m.
  3. 50 × 7 km = 350 km.
    1 km + 350 km = 351 km.
