Chapter 8.6 (Mathematics 5)

Division of kilometres and metres by whole numbers

Division of kilometres and metres

Group Activity 9

In pairs: Nyoro walked 30 km 100 m in 7 days. He walked equal distances each day.

Find the distance he covered in a day.

  1. Set the question in division form.
  2. First divide km by 7. Write the quotient above 30 km.
  3. Multiply the quotient by 7 and write the answer below 30. Subtract the product from 30 km.
  4. Convert the result obtained in (3) into metres and add it to 100 m.
  5. Divide the result in (4) by 7. Write the quotient above 100.
  6. Discuss the results and share with other groups.

Example 8

a) Divide 75 km 370 m by 5

Therefore,
75 km 370 m ÷ 5 = 15 km 74 m

b) Divide 25 km 254 m by 3

Therefore,
25 km 254 m ÷ 3 = 8 km 418 m

Exercise K

K1

Work out in pairs:

K2

Work out:

  1. 95 km 365 m by 5
    The result is  km  m.
  2. 144 km 660 m by 12
    The result is  km  m.
  3. 42 km 228 m by 9
    The result is  km  m.
  4. 161 km 800 m by 20
    The result is  km  m.

127 km 350 m   =  km  m

358 km 200 m   =  km  m
