Chapter 11.3 (Mathematics 5)

Conversion of Units of Capacity

Conversion of litres to millilitres

Example 1

A bottle of fruit juice was marked 2 l. How much juice was this in millilitres?

  1. 1 l = 1 000 ml
  2. 2 l = 2 × 1 000 ml = 2 000 ml

Example 2a

Convert 12 l to ml

  1. 1 l = 1 000 ml
  2. 12 l = 12 × 1000 ml = 12 000 ml

Example 2b

Convert 7 l 35 ml to ml

  1. 1 l = 1 000 ml
  2. 7 l = 7 × 1 000 ml = 7 000 ml
  3. 7 l 35 ml = 7 000 ml + 35 ml = 7 035 ml

Conversion of millilitres to litres and millilitres

Example 3

A jug hold 3 000 ml of water. What is the capacity of the jug in litres?

  1. 1 000 ml = 1 l
  2. 3 000 ml = 3 × 1 000 ml = 3 l

Example 4

Convert 9 450 ml to litres and millilitres.

  1. 1000 ml = 1 l
  2. 9 450 ml = 9 000 ml + 450 ml =
    = 9 × 1 000 ml + 450 ml = 9 l 450 ml

Exercise F

  1. 2 000 ml =  l
